Bacolod City Launches Initiatives to Address Rising Teenage Pregnancy Rates
Filemon Cruzado
Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya has voiced serious concern regarding the increasing incidence of teenage pregnancies within the city. "This year alone, Bacolod has documented 200 cases of teenage pregnancy, including five involving girls aged between 10 and 14," Gasataya stated, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures.
In response to this critical issue, Bacolod City recently organized its inaugural Teen Summit, assembling over 200 young leaders, students, and advocates. The event aimed to bolster efforts toward achieving Zero Teenage Pregnancy while also raising awareness about abuse and HIV prevention.
"Since July, our initiatives have included comprehensive HIV education programs, which are conducted alongside projects such as the Bacolod Youth Lounge," the mayor explained. "These platforms provide youth with safe environments to learn, develop, and obtain mental health support."
Mayor Gasataya acknowledged the valuable contributions from partner organizations, including Gawad Kalinga, as well as city resource speakers, which have been instrumental in advancing these youth-centered programs.
