Trump Brokers Ceasefire Agreement Between Thailand and Cambodia Amid Renewed Border Clashes

US President Donald Trump revealed on Friday that he held telephone conversations with the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, resulting in their agreement to halt border fighting and reinstate a ceasefire agreement established earlier this year. Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, "I had a very good conversation this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, concerning the very unfortunate reawakening of their long-running War. They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord." He added, "Both Countries are ready for PEACE and continued Trade with the United States of America."
However, the Thai prime minister's remarks earlier the same day did not acknowledge any formal ceasefire. Anutin emphasized that Thailand was not the aggressor but responding to attacks. He requested that Trump urge Cambodia not only to end hostilities but also to withdraw troops and remove landmines along the disputed border.
"I explained to President Trump that we are not the aggressor against Cambodia but we are retaliating," Anutin said. "He wants a ceasefire. I told him to tell our friends - don't just say a ceasefire but they must tell the world that Cambodia will cease fire, withdraw its troops, remove all landmines it has planted. They must show us first."
The border dispute along the 817-kilometer frontier between Cambodia and Thailand reignited recently, resulting in some of the most intense fighting in months. Both nations blame each other for the renewed clashes, which have caused at least 20 deaths and over 260 injuries.
Previously, Trump had helped broker a ceasefire in July after a short but severe clash, which was expanded in October when the leaders met in Malaysia and agreed on troop withdrawals and the release of Cambodian prisoners of war. However, Thailand suspended the agreement last month amid allegations that Cambodia planted new landmines causing Thai casualties—a charge Cambodia denies.
President Trump has positioned himself as a peacemaker on the global stage, claiming credit for resolving multiple conflicts and expressing optimism about restoring peace between Thailand and Cambodia. His intervention highlights ongoing tensions in Southeast Asia and the fragile nature of the ceasefire arrangements.
