Abra Lawmaker Proposes Mandatory Solar Energy Systems for Government Offices

Abra Lone District Representative JB Bernos has filed House Bill No. 3126, also known as the On-Grid Solar Energy Systems Act, which seeks to institutionalize the use of on-grid solar energy across government offices. Bernos emphasizes the government's role in leading the transition to renewable energy, highlighting its potential to reduce electricity expenses and deliver services in a more sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.

"If we are to succeed in the shift towards renewable energy, government itself should show that RE is a viable and reliable option," Bernos stated.

Under the proposed legislation, all national and local government buildings would be required to install on-grid solar energy systems. Within one year of installation, these systems must cover 20 percent of the average monthly electricity consumption (AMU), increasing progressively each year until they supply 100 percent by the fifth year.

Bernos noted that on-grid solar technology offers practical benefits, providing immediate reductions in electricity costs and lowering public sector carbon emissions. He further underscored the affordability and feasibility of solar power due to recent decreases in solar panel prices.

The representative also pointed out that solar panels, with typical lifespans of 25 to 30 years, represent a sound long-term investment combining economic and environmental advantages.

Encouraging private households to embrace solar technology, Bernos remarked, "The transition to solar energy will also benefit our community. Since we rely less on the grid, there will be more resources for our neighbors and community to use."
