Harry Roque Faces Asylum and Travel Challenges in Europe Amid Legal Issues
Bonifacio Tumang
Former presidential spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque has experienced significant difficulties in his attempt to secure asylum and travel within Europe. After applying for asylum in the Netherlands, Roque was scheduled for a flight to Vienna, Austria. However, Dutch officials informed him that the responsibility for granting him protection lies with the Austrian government, as Austria issued his visa.
Roque revealed that despite being cleared as fit to travel by Dutch medical professionals, his own surgeons advised against flying due to health concerns. Consequently, he was removed from the plane, and his trip to Vienna was canceled.
According to Roque, this development followed reports of his arrest related to qualified human trafficking charges linked to the cancellation of his passport. He underwent two surgeries prior to being instructed to seek protection from Austrian authorities.
He has expressed confidence in pursuing his asylum claim in Europe despite the challenges, noting that he accepts the Netherlands' position and is prepared to make his case elsewhere on the continent.
"I did not dispute the Dutch government's stance because I believe I can present my asylum request successfully anywhere in Europe," Roque stated in a recent interview broadcast on Boldyak TV.
The situation reflects the complex intersection of legal, health, and bureaucratic challenges that Roque currently faces as he navigates his status amid ongoing investigations and health concerns.
